The town is part of the Montefeltro territory and is characterized by its high and dominant position. The most significant building in San Leo is its fortress, set right on top of the rocky spur.
The fortress of Gradara, built in a strategic position between the Romagna and Marche regions, was inhabited by several families: first the Malatestas from Rimini, then the Sforzas from Milan and finally the Della Roveres from Pesaro.
This city owes its fortune to the Montefeltro family, and in particular to Duke Federico, one of the most important figures of the Renaissance. The city was the birthplace of Rafael, the illustrious 15th-century artist.
